What Are the Biggest Risks for Teen Drivers?

When you’re a teenager, driving is one of the biggest privileges to look forward to. Driving is a step toward freedom, toward adulthood, and toward making more decisions. As parents, when your child reaches the age of driving, it can be a nerve-racking time. While it is normal to let your teen take the car out for a drive once they have their license, you know that their lack of experience creates a risk. Being a teen often means taking risks, but when those risks can lead to severe injuries or death, that is when we as parents know that safety precautions and proper driver education both need to be taken seriously.

Teen driver accident statistics

Over the past decade, there has been a notable decline of 6.4% in the number of teen driver fatalities. However, it’s concerning to observe a sharp 14.3% increase in teen driver deaths in the most recent year-over-year period. To put these figures into perspective, in 2011, there were 1,495 fatalities among teen drivers under the age of 20. This number decreased to 1,225 in 2019 but rose to 1,400 in 2020, which is the latest year for which data is available. Tragically, a total of 13,554 teen drivers lost their lives between 2011 and 2020.

Kentucky stands out with the highest fatality rate among teen drivers during the period from 2011 to 2020, recording 5.79 annual deaths per 10,000 licensed teen drivers. Following closely are Mississippi with a rate of 4.31 and Wyoming at 2.98. In comparison, the overall fatality rate for teen drivers in the United States during the same timeframe was 1.59 annual deaths per 10,000 licensed teen drivers.

A critical factor contributing to teen driver fatalities is speeding. Teen driver deaths were 38.0% more likely to involve speeding when compared to all driver deaths between 2011 and 2020. An alarming 44.4% of teen driver fatalities during the past decade were linked to speeding, while this figure stood at 32.2% for all driver fatalities. This underscores the need for addressing the issue of speeding specifically among teen drivers to enhance road safety.

What are the biggest risk factors for teen drivers in Kentucky?

Teen drivers, like all drivers, face various risks while on the road. However, it’s essential to understand the specific challenges and dangers that teenagers encounter due to their age and level of experience.

The biggest risks teenagers face when behind the wheel include:

Parents should address these risks proactively. Education, open communication, and setting clear rules and expectations for teen drivers can help mitigate these dangers. Additionally, being a positive role model for safe driving behavior can have a lasting effect on your teenager’s habits behind the wheel.

Their lack of driving experience can mean that your teen may cause an accident, but it also means that they may not understand how to react properly when someone else is driving recklessly. When that happens, our team at Wilt Injury Lawyers is here to represent you and your family. When your child is injured it can be a very stressful and scary time. Not only are you worried about your teenager, but now you have to worry about insurance, medical bills, and how life will be going forward.
